Fashion { Reality Check }

I love reading fashion blogs because of the pictures where I can get outfit inspiration. But I was unsure about starting my own blog because I felt intimidated since my outfits aren’t as ‘elaborate’ all the time.

Then I realized that there are important lessons to be learned from street style, and that fashion is very personal. Even though I would like to wear heels every day, my lifestyle (and the weather in Montreal) doesn’t allow for that. Regardless of that, I can still look put-together and feel good.

I hope that I can inspire every girl (and boy!) to look their best, no matter what, and not get intimidated by trends or what others choose to wear. Fashion is about finding our own individual style identity that suit our lifestyle, budget, and personality, rather than following someone else’s idea of a good outfit!

I spent that morning getting work done at a bakery, so I wore a comfortable but put-together outfit, appropriate for the Montreal weather, which is still cold this time of year (that day, it was -10˚C /14˚F). .

How about you? What are some of your every day outfit? What would like to see in a lifestyle blog that’s different?

Fashion { Coral }

Another outfit I wore a few weekends ago when my sister was visiting. Since it was   a low-key weekend, I didn’t get too dressed up. I’ve been making a conscious effort to add more color to my wardrobe, and this bright coral sweater was perfect! I hesitated to get it, but my aunt loved it so much when I tried it on that she bought it for me on the spot, and I’m so happy (and grateful) that she did, because I’ve worn it many times since I got it. Just to push my boundaries even more, I paired the sweater with this neon yellow necklace that I got from SheInside.

What are some of things that you can do to switch up your wardrobe a little?

Fashion { Pink Weekend }

The universe answered (temporarily) my call for a personal style photographer and sent my sister for a few days. We were able to get a few outfit pictures, which is really great for me because she’s one of the only people that can make me feel comfortable and make me laugh in any situation. It’s so important to have a few friends that you are so comfortable around that you can truly be yourself, even when you are vulnerable (I’m extremely shy in front of the camera…).

The weekend was low-key, catching up and spending time with the family, so I didn’t get too dressed up. I love pairing a sweater with jeans, and then making sure to accessorize.

What’s your idea of a comfortable weekend outfit? What are some of the important parts to a friendship?

{ Instagram Fashion Diary 2 }

Clearly I haven’t been consistent enough with taking ‘outfit of the day’ pictures for my Instagram. But, here are the few pictures that I found lately, a few outfits from being out and about, mostly for running errands or going out to a cozy date night.

The reality is that I live in a really cold city, and looking stylish while making sure that I’m wearing enough layers to keep me warm is quite challenging. Most days, I have to wear my Timberland winter boots with my huge (but incredibly warm) Northface jacket. So maybe that’s why I don’t have enough ootd pictures and I should aim to take them before I put the many layers of clothes on?

How about you? How do you try to stay stylish but warm (if you live in a cold city)? And if you live in a warm city, well, good for you.. I’m jealous.

Fashion { Lessons from NYFW Spring 2014 }

Even though fashion shows are obviously a really fun part of fashion week, what I like even more is to look at street style to get fashion inspiration for guidelines to live by. Ultimately, it’s what’s being worn on the street that’s true fashion, because even if something passes on a runway, street style and what people choose to wear on a day-to-day basis determine the course of a fashion trend.

Last year, I talked about ‘The real NYFW‘, where the images captured by fashion bloggers offer different perspective of fashion week, and give readers an alternative glimpse of what goes on.

This year, I give you a few lessons that can be learned from the street style during NYFW. These are simply guidelines that we should all remember every morning when we are deciding on our outfit for the day.

{ There are no rules }

Style & fashion are forms of expression, to show the world who you are. Unless you are harming someone else, there are no rules and you can wear whatever the heck you like that makes you feel at your best.

{ Confidence is the best outfit }

Whatever you are wearing will look much better when you wear it with confidence. Someone standing tall, shoulders back and with a confident strut will inevitably draw the attention of curious eyes, so what better way to flaunt your outfit by wearing it with gusto?

{ Step out of your comfort zone & experiment }

…because, well, why not? That’s half the fun of fashion: trying new outfits, patterns, styles, seeing what you like or don’t like, and putting together outfits that give you a boost of confidence.

{ Be bold }

Fashion is a form of expression of your individuality, your style, and even your mood, so why not go bold and make a statement with a piece of jewelry, an amazing bag, a bold lip color, or a unique piece of clothing? If you follow Rule #1, then this is easy-peasy.

{ Have fun }

Whatever age, shape or size you might be, fashion should be fun. Most of our days are spent in the outfits that we choose in the morning, so why not wear something that puts a smile on your face, that makes you feel confident, that makes you feel like you can tackle anything? They call it a ‘power suit’ for a reason! I am not saying that fashion is the key to happiness. No. Rather, fashion is a perk of life, and can even be compared to wearing art, and since there is no such thing as too much beauty, why not enjoy it and have fun with it?

{ The little touches matter }

An outfit is pulled with the finishing touches. Without them would be the same thing as not putting tape or a ribbon when you wrap a gift – it’s that last touch that will differentiate one from the other. These can be as simple as doing your nails, putting on makeup (even if it’s basic, a little can go a long way in accentuating your features), fixing your hair, and putting on a few accessories. Never undermine the details of an outfit because this is the part that can take an ordinary outfit into an extraordinary outfit. These little touches contribute to your unique style & individuality.

What do you think of these lessons? Which one could you work on? Can you think of any other ones?

Fashion { Peter Pilotto X Target }

The alarm rang way too early for a Sunday morning. I was tempted to stay cocooned in my warm bed, knowing that crisp winter cold was waiting for me outside. But then I remembered the colorful patterns and styles I had seen in the lookbook for the Peter Pilotto collection for Target, and I sprung (sort of) out of bed.

This was my first time going to a designer collaboration launch at Target, and it was surprisingly calm and tame. I was expecting a lot more running/grabbing/pulling hair. There were only about 20 of us waiting before opening hours, while a few started running the minute the doors opened. Luckily, I was able to snatch up 6 pieces to try on, and ended up getting 3. I was so excited about my purchase that I went straight home to style them for outfits that I can’t wait to wear.

The piece that I really wanted from the lookbook was the sweatshirt, and I am crazy about it. It’s so comfy and the pattern is just amazing. The shirt dress was a last minute grab, and I’m so glad I picked it up because it’s going to be a really versatile piece that I could even pull off at work. And the crop top. Oh the crop top. I have been searching for a unique crop top in a LONG time, and this one has the right fit, the right stretch in the fabric, and the right details with the slits on the top. I am so excited about it, but a bit nervous to show some skin.

Which one is your favorite piece? How would you style them? Were you able to get your hands on a few items from the collection? If so, which ones?

Outfit { Birthday Suit }

Here’s a little glimpse of the outfit I wore for my birthday. It was a very small get-together so the outfit was quite simple. These pants are from Mexx and are incredibly comfortably, and I had been anxiously waiting to wear this necklace from Primark that I bought in Edinburgh. What do you think? Yay or nay?

Shopping Review { Sheinside.com }

This blog post has actually been ready for over 3 weeks now, so I am posting this with a bit (…a lot) of annoyance. The long wait has taken away from the excitement of receiving my package in the mail. I placed my order on Monday September 30th, and JUST received it yesterday. I have enough experience with online shopping to know that this is way too long of a wait (I’ve received ASOS and Shopbop packages in less than 5 days…!). I’m unsure whether the issue was with She Inside or with Canadian customs, either way, it’s frustrating!

Needless to say, there’s something really fun about online shopping – you sit comfortably in your pjs, and browse through an endless selection of items. My cousin told me about Sheinside.com so when I went to visit her in Ottawa, we spent at least an hour browsing and ended up lusting over many of the statement necklaces. Despite the LONG wait (no, I am not done complaining about it) they have a lot of good prices and quite a wide selection. I chose these two necklaces because of the vibrant colors and the details. They ended up costing about $8 each, including shipping. I can’t wait to style them for the holidays! I still need to find a good sweater so that I can jazz it up with one of these pieces.

What are your experiences with online shopping? Any other websites you would recommend?

Outfit { Blue & Floral }

After complaining that I don’t have a photographer to take outfit pictures, the world swiftly sent my sister to me! She surprised me for my 25th birthday and flew all the way from Calgary to spend two weeks with us. There are no words to explain how nice it’s been having her home.

Not only have we been having fun, but we have also had the chance to do a few photoshoots! Maybe I can convince her to move back to Montreal if I gave her a full-time job as my photographer? I wish…

Here’s a simple fall outfit – comfy pants from Mexx with floral details on the side that I fell in love with, a cotton top from Smart Set that’s so easy to throw on and is comfortable for long days of running errands, and a leopard belt, of course, to add a fun touch to the outfit. I’m also wearing my favorite wedge sneakers that I snatched up at Winners last year and still love because they are so comfy and combine two of my favorite colors!

And until I have figured out how to take more detailed outfit pictures, I thought I would share once in a while a compilation of outfit pictures from my Instagram!

So here is a mish-mash of the outfit pictures I’ve posted on Instagram so far. Which ones are your favourites? Do any of you have suggestions about how to take outfit pictures if I don’t have a personal photographer?
